The Naval Problem

Naval communications equipment, electronics cabinets and protected compartments often depend on conductive gaskets, sealed access panels and shielded cable penetrations. These components operate in an environment where salt, moisture, vibration, temperature changes, repeated opening and mechanical wear can gradually affect their condition.

Today, many of these components are inspected manually at scheduled intervals. A seal or enclosure may begin degrading between inspections without providing a clear warning or showing exactly where the problem is located.

Smart EMI Gasket Concept

A gasket that can report changing condition.

SignalWatch Maritime would add sensing capabilities directly to selected EMI gaskets, enclosure doors, access panels and cable penetrations. The system could monitor electrical continuity, compression behaviour, moisture exposure and indicators associated with corrosion or mechanical wear.

Each monitored component could have its own digital asset record containing its installation date, baseline condition, inspections, maintenance activity and changes over time.

When a significant change occurs, the system would identify the specific enclosure, panel or section of gasket that may require attention.

Technical note

Electrical continuity is a potential proxy for physical degradation. It does not automatically establish RF-shielding performance. Correlation with recognized electromagnetic test methods would be required during validation.

Monitor the seal—not only the room.

Rigid walls and metal enclosures can provide durable electromagnetic protection, but interfaces such as doors, removable panels, gaskets, connectors and cable penetrations may be more exposed to handling and environmental degradation.

SignalWatch Maritime is exploring smart conductive sealing components that measure aspects of their own physical and electrical condition.

Related monitoring approaches may also be relevant to ports, offshore installations, commercial vessels and shipyards where corrosion, moisture and equipment accessibility affect maintenance.
